Michael's CNC conversion project information:

Mill - Jet JTM-830 (Baby Bridgeport) - I haven't found much information on this mill on the 'net. If anyone has links or info about it I would like to hear from you. I am specificaly looking for engineering data on the lead screws so I can have some direct fit ballscrews made without having to take apart the machine for measurements.

Servo Control Hardware - Jon Elson's PWM control system http://pico-systems.com - I went with a closed loop system on a fuel injection engine swap so I figured I'd go closed loop this project too.

Servo Control Software - EMC http://www.linuxcnc.org - <reminisce>I haven't played with linux since you got it by sending email requests to archie servers. It showed up in many UUencoded emails. There used to be a little text file that (I can't remember how) would create a dos executable file that could decode a bigger text file to make the decompression program for unpacking disk images.</reminisce>

Motors - ElectroCraft E690  (model number: 0690-02-008) - Motor Specs

Encoders - HEDS 5605-A06   500CPR - They came with the motors - Encoder Specs (PDF file)

Main Bearings - Fafnir (Timken) 7204W C1 Angular Contact Ball Bearing. These will be mounted in pairs in a preloaded arrangement on one end of the ball screw. The servo motors will attach to the same end of the ball screw. These are for the table and saddle screws.

Float Bearing - FAG 6202.2RSR.C3 Deep Groove Ball Bearing. This bearing will be used to support the floating end of the ballscrew used for the table. The saddle ballscrew is short enough that it shouldn't need one.

Seals - CR9604

Helical Beam Couplers - Used to connect servo shaft to ballscrew. I got mine from McMaster-Carr (p/n 6208K155) 3/8" x 3/8" bore, 1-1/4" OD x 1-1/4" Length.

Previous Updates

I have obtained my bearings and seals. I couldn't get the matched preloaded pair of bearings that I wanted so I changed my design to add a spacer between the bearings. Preload will have to be manually set with a nut. McMaster-Carr has some stainless shims that I might try to use for the spacer. I will also need some shims to go between the motor mount pilot and the outer race of the outside bearing to make sure everything is compressed tightly.

I've changed the design so that ballscrew will now pass all the way through the bearing sleeve and connect directly to the servo shaft.
